Of all the Caribbean islands, the Dominican Republic is the most geographically diverse. It has the highest mountain (above 10,000 feet—it even gets snow in winter), the deepest valley, rainforests, deserts, swamps and white sand beaches. Because the Republic is less prosperous than most Caribbean nations, prices are low, and this, along with the scenery and a friendly, hospitable populace, attracts growing hordes of vacationers. Tourism, in fact, is the country’s leading industry, as in most of the Caribbean. The Republic’s food, music and pace of life are comfortable blends of Spanish, African and native Indian cultures.
