I don’t have any foreign language experience. How will I communicate?
Most participants go on programs to foreign language destinations and many start off with little host country language experience. Our studies show you will quickly be able to communicate at a basic level and after 6 months to a year you should be fluent!
How will the AFS experience affect my education?
AFS is education beyond the classroom. Apart from any formal study undertaken during a program, you will return with new skills in setting priorities, dealing with pressure and new challenges.
Where will I live?
You will be placed with a carefully-screened local family. Your family will provide you with everyday needs, including all meals and accommodation. Depending on your country of choice, your family may not have all of the luxuries we have in Australia, but you can be sure of your host family’s love and support. For Community Service Programs, you may live on-site with other AFSers with meals and accommodation provided.
What can I expect when I arrive?
You will be met by an AFS representative at the airport and you may also be met by your new host family. You will participate in an orientation to help you get used to your new country and to introduce you to other AFSers from around the world.
Will it be safe to go overseas?
AFS has over 50 years of experience in organising intercultural programs. We have handled some difficult situations over this time, using our proven AFS risk management and emergency procedures. AFS staff and volunteers are fully trained to deal with any type of emergency whether it is medical, personal or political. The situation in each of our partner countries is regularly monitored through our international head office. AFS also provides 24-hour support for participants and families around the world.
