20/3/2009 - Harmony Day

AFS celebrates diversity

The concept of multiculturalism has shaped the Australian nation for many years, and this Harmony Day, it is important to recognise and appreciate the diversity of cultures and life experiences that animate our everyday lives. AFS Intercultural Programs is deeply committed to supporting Harmony Day, aiming to promote peace and global understanding through intercultural exchange.

In 2009 alone, more than 300 Australian youth will empower their cultural consciousness and discover their potential to be a part of this global project of peace. Australia also welcomes more than fifty young ambassadors from overseas to live and learn in local Australian communities, share knowledge and transcend cultural barriers to build lifelong friendships.

During this time, AFS encourages people across the country to share the spirit of cultural reconciliation, live life and be a part of the change.
Learning about and from other cultures is not only a truly wondrous personal experience, it is a journey that lasts a lifetime and will help us create a sustainable future shaped by every individual, every culture and every language.

Harmony Day has been held on 21 March every year since 1999, and celebrates Australia’s success as a diverse society united by a common set of values.
