5/6/2008 - Discovering Chinese Cuisine
Learn authentic Chinese cooking with AFS
These days spring rolls, fried rice and chow mein noodles are common staples in every Westerners’ diet. With the vast majority of the world’s dinner tables being greatly influenced by Chinese cuisine, it is no wonder that so many tourists want to travel to the country to taste the plethora of traditional Chinese dishes in all of their authentic glory.
AFS Intercultural Programs is currently accepting applications for the Chinese Cooking Program departing in 2009. Participants will travel to China where, upon their arrival, they will attend Mandarin classes. Following this, they will be enrolled in a vocational school to study Chinese cookery. Programs run for either one year or six months and provide participants with the chance to learn about the intricacies of Chinese cooking from Chinese chefs.
Kelsey Hamsey recently returned from an AFS program to Beijing. The opportunity allowed her to gain a much deeper understanding of Chinese culture and cuisine, and she has nothing but glowing praises for her unique, life-changing experience.
“Before I left for China, I had an interest in Chinese culture and food, but now I love it! I never knew that there were so many kinds of Chinese food! Now I plan on teaching my family what Chinese food is all about!” she exclaims.
“The exchange year changed my life. I grew into a new person, matured and developed into an independent and confident young woman. I learnt a new language, experienced a new and interesting culture and made so many new friends. I went from not understanding a thing on my first day to on my last day understanding everything.”
The AFS Chinese Cooking Program costs $7,500 for one year and $6,900 for six month. The program fee covers accommodation, meals, and all classes in China.
