2008 Akito Sumibo Scholarship

With the support of Anglo Coal and Mitsui Coal Holdings Pty Ltd, AFS is pleased to announce that one full scholarship to Japan is available to a lucky student on an Intensive Program (for two months) departing in December 2008.

The Akito Sumibo Scholarship, established by Anglo Coal Australia (ACA) and Mitsui Coal Holdings Pty Ltd, honours Mr. Akito Sumibo who unexpectedly died in July 2004. This program aims to provide a young Australian with a life-changing experience in Japan.

The scholarship funds the entire AFS participation fee to Japan. It covers:
√ Return travel from your home right to the door of your host family
√ Orientation and enrichment activities during the stay
√ Medical costs incurred during the visit, except for pre-existing conditions, dental and eye care

Who is eligible?
An AFS applicant who:
√ is in Year 9, 10, 11 or 12 at any high school in Australia the year of application
√ meets the AFS application guidelines for Japan
√ is successful in AFS selection

Anglo Coal Australia (ACA), is one of Australia’s leading coal producers adding value to Australia and the world. They have extensive coal mining interests and prospects in Queensland and New South Wales. Mitsui Coal Holdings Pty Ltd is a long term partner of ACA and they lead all other Japanese trading houses in coal export tonnage to Japan, representing some 15% of total coal exports from Australia. Today, Mitsui has investments in six mines in Queensland and two mines in NSW.

AFS has been working in partnership with Anglo Coal Australia and Mitsui Coal Holdings Pty Ltd since 2006. During this time two students have been sponsored to experience a two month program in Japan.
