The AFS Adelaide Coastal, Adelaide North East & Mt Lofty local groups have merged to form the new Adelaide Local Group.
Volunteers play a key role in AFS and are essential for it to work effectively and foster the ideals which have made it unique for nearly 60 years in Australia. With everyone becoming busier there are fewer volunteers able to take on the key roles in local groups – this has been a major factor leading to the merger of the local groups.
The Adelaide Local Group would welcome your assistance to make AFS grow stronger in Adelaide and to ensure our hosted students, our students currently overseas, those just arriving home and those waiting to go have the best support possible to make their AFS experience a most positive life changing event.
A great way to contribute is to come to our monthly get-togethers and hear our returnees as they tell stories of their AFS experience and our hosted students as they talk about their country and culture. The monthly get-togethers enable applicants and their families, returnees, hosted students and their host families, to interact with others for mutual benefit. In particular, the get-togethers provide opportunities for:
• Applicants and their families to talk to others who are in a similar situation or have been in the past, and to become better prepared for the AFS experience,
• Returnees, whether recent or years past, to share their experiences with others,
• Hosted students to access a valuable network and support via contact with the local group – especially other hosted students and returnees, and
• Hosting families to interact with other hosting families and people who have hosted in the past.
In addition to attending the get-togethers, you could consider assisting in various ways, such as providing host family or student support, giving school talks, assisting in applicant selection, or simply spreading the word of AFS.
Thank you in anticipation of your ongoing support of AFS Adelaide. We hope to see you at our get-togethers.
