Hosting an AFS participant gives you the chance to experience a new culture in your own home. It’s a fantastic opportunity.
You’ll be introducing someone to Aussie life, discovering your own culture and country, and expand your own horizons too.
If your kids are planning an AFS exchange, this will give them a taste of what they are in for. If they have already been on an exchange, this is your chance to enable someone to make an equally important experience.
AFS offers the support you need. All you have to do is carry on as usual and treat your international guest like any other family member. That’s what they come to Australia for.
AFS friendships last a lifetime. By welcoming an AFS student, you are making the world a friendlier place and giving your family an unforgettable experience.

What Options are there?
We know that families can some times find it hard to host for 11 months, so we are flexible with our hosting programs, and like to cater to your families current situation|
Short programs
Duration of two to eleven weeks, starting throughout the year. Participants will be between 15 and 18 years old. |
School programs Duration of three to twelve months, starting at the beginning or the middle of the year. Participants will be between 15 and 18 years old. |
Adult programs Duration of three to twelve months, starting at the beginning or the middle of the year. Participants will be at least 18 years old. |
Welcome families Host a student for a small part of the program duration at the beginning of their stay. |
Backup families Host a participant who doesn't fit into his original host family for the remainder of the program duration. |
Eligibility Criteria
You have the perfect family! It doesn't matter if you have 2 dogs, a small house, or are retired, if you're willing to open your home to an international exchange student, we'll match you with someone!To be eligible to host, you do need to have the following aspects:
- Keen difference in different cultures and ready to learn something new
- The ability to provide adequate accommodation and daily meals
- Willingness to intergrate someone into your family and everyday life
What does AFS Provide?
AFS volunteers and staff are there to support you throughout your hosting experience. All AFS host families volunteer to host an international participant to welcome them as a new addition to their family.Whilst hosting an AFS participant, AFS does provide:
- 24 hour emergency contact, for just in case something does go wrong
- Local support for both the host family and participant
- A large volunteer network, there to help out when needed
- Regular local group meetings to meet other host families and participants
- The AFS National Office there to help out when our volunteers can't
